Although I'm not accustomed to Mac O.S., what is selected in the in-output tab under audio? There, you should choose what device is used to output audio. Looking at it might illuminate the underlying configuration of possible problems.

All electric machines work on smoke... when the smoke escapes... they don't work anymore

which version of macOS and which type of Mac? Intel or Apple Silicon?

Intel Sequoia 15.3 The only device that was listed is default in the latest version. The older version shows all the audio devices and works fine with just default checked. Audio worked without any changes in version 5 as well.
