Hello, I am going to be using QLC+ with a live performance on March 22, 2014. I have a small fixture list (4) and I'll be controlling QLC+ on OSX Lion via Korg Microsampler (USB Midi) on stage with the Virtual Console. My idea is to design sequence and chaser loops with scene flashes like strobe. I will not use the show fuction because we do not use a click, we are a rock band.
After going thru all the tutorials, walk-thrus and searching the forum I now encounter some questions. I will submit my fixture definitions to the forum, but my first problem is with my 2 mini moving head washes 18x3w. example here:
http://www.blizzardlighting.com/index.p ... &Itemid=71
the Strobe and the Dimmer functions are both on the same DMX channel.
000-007 closed
008-134 0-100% dimming
135-239 strobe s-f
240-255 open
How do I approach this as a function? With Intensity, when I set auto fade in/out the strobe will be activated. With Shutter, the light will not respond.
I am still learning how to program Chase/Sequence/EFX I am sorry if I am missing something obvious here. Thank you!
Fixture Channel : Shutter & Dimmer same channel
Update: I am using a lot of trial & error to test my ability to program Sequences, Chases and EFX. I do not have a background in lighting, so I don't associate much of the terminology with my ideas.
Any other tutorial suggestions other than the Massimo videos and literature would be appreciated. I ran across a series of videos from TOMOBIKI01 on youtube, When I couldnt understand how EFX are implemented, his 012 video helped explain that to me.
thanks

Trial and error is probably the best way to learn most software. It allows you to find your own space in the design paradigm of the software.
I assume you made your own definition of the fixture (please share it with the project) so I cannot give you an example but the way to handle this is via 2 limited range sliders (and maybe a button or two). Steps:
1. Create slider.
2. Go to properties of slider.
3. Go to level tab, and find the Dimmer/Strobe channel on the fixture.
4. Expand the dimmer channel and find the range you want: 0-100% dimming.
5. Click on the (now enabled) From capability button - above the list of fixtures & levels.
6. Click OK.
Repeat for strobe. You may want to invert the slider an possibly increase the max value by 1.
I would also add Open and Kill buttons.
I assume this is a LTP channel so whatever control value you last send to the channel is kept, so either the strobe or the dimmer or one of the 2 buttons will work when touched.

I sympathise with you Joel. I had no experience with modern lighting fixtures and understanding the terminology and methods was difficult. I'm beginning to understand QLC+ now but it has been hard work. I'm used to software being intuitive and QLC+ is not at all intuitive. You have to watch every tutorial and search this forum when you are stuck.
Congratulations Darrow, you just added yourself to the long list of users that bring to this forum just pointless complains.
If you want things to improve, propose something. Otherwise I will continue to ignore posts like yours.
You are always free to choose commercial softwares, pay them a lot and THEN you can complain...always if they will listen to you.

That was uncalled for Massimo. I like QLC+ very much and I was not complaining. It's the best free lighting software around and I greatly appreciate the hard work you have put in. My post was intended to provide encouragement to another user who is having difficulty.
Chill Massimo . Having donated to the project in a few ways I am a fan of QLC+, and having used it a bit have learnt how to get it to do what I want, and I am happy.
As a long time user and developer Massimo, setting up QLC+ to do what you want will be second nature but to a new user / lighting operator, that might be very different.
All software has it's own operating quirks. One of my favourite packages, Blender, has it's odd "Right click" to select objects.
Maybe what we should do is ask some new users what they find tricky about setting up / using QLC+, and see if there are either improvements or new tutorials / documentation that would help.
We all appreciate how much work you put in to this project Massimo, I personally think you could do with easing off a bit , but please don't take any criticism personally.
