Gigs - how do you do it ?

Hi
I've posted a few questions recently asking how I can recreate the features of my current gig light controller.
However, maybe I'm thinking about it wrongly.
Does anyone else use QLC+ for gigging - if so can you supply any hints/tips.
The one caveat is that we don't have someone on the light desk. Currently I select a patch on a keypad before the song starts and then control light changes with footswitches while playing.
Thoughts/comments/hints/tips/suggestions all welcome/
