Minimising processor usage with VDJ

A friend has an (older) laptop and a weird Sony Vaio PC thing which looks like a laptop with a hump on it's back.

Both can run the mammoth Virtual DJ OK. Both can run QLC+ OK. He also has a laser running over ILDA with the KAM software for it.

Problem 1: The laptop overheats during a DJ set (it's an ACER and the poor thing is a bit rubbish). The fans is clean, working, and not sitting on a duvet!

Problem 2: The Sony Vaio can do VDJ and QLC+ just about (Win 98), but Sound-to-light kills it. The sound stutters and CPU usage hits 100%. I suggested turning off the OTT graphics widgets in VDJ but what about QLC+? Is there a way to keep the functionality (the ILDA software is a different matter) by turning some features off in QLC+?

He's saving up for a new PC but in the meantime, I'm not lending my W540 for parties/discos where beer is involved!

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Robert,
I would say the 2 things you can work on are:
1) the number of triggers (bars)
2) the visibility of the audio triggers widget

4-6 bars should save some CPU, while placing the widget in a hidden page of a frame should avoid consuming CPU to render the bars in real time.
Apart for this, I'm afraid the FFT is necessary in any case but I have no idea how much CPU it consumes on an old computer.

Thanks,

I thought the number of bars would make a difference but haven't tried it yet (he was panicking on Saturday night!). The visibility part is interesting.

Funny how he said it worked at home though...
