Using SVGA monitor

Hi
Firstly can I say QLC+ is great I am using the image and was up and running in no time at all the web interface works fine and everything works as it should. However I want to use an old SVGA monitor, I have an HDMI to SVGA adapter that works on RPI but needs small change to the config file on the Pi to do so. I have attempted to do this using putty from a windows PC and also using a terminal app from iPad but get access denied / incorrect credentials. I am using the default Pi username and password (pi / raspberry) but it appears not to like the password, I can find no reference to the password being different in the documentation? Any advice would be appreciated both in terms of how to log in and if there is any reason that the SVGA adapter should not work.
Thanks
Graham
