I'm new to the forum, but I've been tinkering with QLC+ a bit. I think I understand what you are asking. Perhaps, this will help. In order to directly control QLC+ from Ableton Live, you need to implement a virtual midi patch cable. I'm using loopbe1. It only offers one patch cable in the free version, but will get the job done. You can upgrade to a more robust version of loopbe, should you need more virtual cables.
From Ableton, you need to create an 'external midi instrument'. In the instrument setting, you need to set the output to loopbe1. (or whatever virtual patch cable software you may end up using). From QLC+, you need to set your proper input to midi for the loopbe1 input. It should be called 'loopbe internal midi' Just click the input box in the check box.
Now, to actually control anything, you will need to set up a fixture and address it via the virtual console tab of QLC+. I don't have the time to address all the details here on this post, but more or less, create, for example, a button on the VC and set your external input using the auto detect. If all is working well, you should go back into Ableton, press a note on the midi keyboard, and QLC+ will read the midi trigger data into the blank fields. Long and short, you can control all your sliders, knobs, buttons, whatever, on QLC+ Virtual Console remotely via ableton live and your midi keyboard.
What's even better? Now you can record a live light show sequence(s) in ableton live, along with your audio track (and even video track via ableton). The potential is endless. I love QLC+ ! It is one of the most impressive offerings of it's kind and to boot, it's free! Hope that helps, rather than confuses. There's many things to go wrong, and many things that may affect your particular setup differently than my own. At least I hope you get the basic idea.
Best of luck to you.

I"m all PC right now. I think you are correct though, iac driver/core midi setting should do the trick. Steps about the same once you get Ableton talking to QLC+.
