Audio only plays for about half a second

I've tried several ways to incorporate a short wav file in QLC+ but I can only get the first half second or less to play. I've tried creating a function of the audio (and tried it with several different short wav files) and then play that with a button in the VC but it only play for a split second, whether the button is in a frame or a solo frame, makes no difference. I've tried creating a chaser with the audio in it, but even if I increase the hold to several seconds longer than the audio length it still only plays a fraction of a second. I've tried creating a Show with the audio in it. I can see the whole waveform is there, but when I play it it only is audible for a split second and then cuts out but the playhead keeps moving to the end of the show. I've tried creating a sequence that will play for as long or longer than the audio is but that didn't help. I checked my audio tab in the input/output section, it correctly identifies my sound card but does not work correctly whether I tick Default or manually tick the sound card box. I have no problem playing these wav files (or any others) using windows media player. Any ideas?

hmm, and if I go into my show with the audio file, advance the cursor to partway through the audio and hit play, I get about a quarter to a half second of that part of the audio file. So it's not that the audio files are not complete. I can see their waveforms, and I can play them in Shows for about a quarter to a half second at any point in their duration, but no matter what I try it only actually plays the audio out loud for a quarter to a half second, then abruptly cuts off.

well I can't necessarily fault the program. I loaded QLC+ on a different computer and it worked perfectly, the audio plays perfectly using the Audio Function as intended. Unfortunately this is NOT the computer that I will need to use to run our light show.
The problematic computer is a Toshiba a135-s2386 with (supposedly) Realtek HD Audio chip. I'm using XP SP2 and the driver from Realtek for XP HD Audio, but I think that chip was originally made for Vista. I wonder if that's where the problem is.
I have written Realtek to see if they have any ideas, why Windows and Media Player audio would work perfectly, but QLC+ is having audio problems using the default devices. No word from them yet. Anyone on here know a solution? (I may end up trying a $40 USB external sound card, but I'd like to fix the problem on the computer itself instead of adding more components.)

My solution would be to give up on an ancient operating system and install Linux on there (Ubuntu, or a lighter weight variant). It will cost you precisely $0. Linux is the O/S QLC+ is developed on. You're flogging a dead horse at the moment.

hmmm, that is a very interesting idea. Scary, for someone who knows very little about Linux. I installed it once on an old desktop... I remember it taking me several attempts.
Question about Linux.... will it automatically detect my components and apply the proper drivers, or is that something I will need to know how to do manually?
Thanks for the advice. I just finally got XP all updated and they're ending support for it in a couple of weeks. Maybe I can figure out how to make an exact copy of my harddrive to an external drive, then install Linux and if things go wrong I could possibly copy everything back from my external drive.

You could try linux, live off a memory key. That way there is no change to your hard disk.

Good point from OddSocks. Or if your BIOS is too old to allow you to boot from USB, the Ubuntu DVD also boots into a fully functioning (but slow) system without touching the hard disk, so you can see how well it works before committing, I don't know how long ago you tried Linux but on less than bleeding-edge hardware I would be very surprised if it didn't work 100%.
Oh and it will also partition the disk for you to make a dual-boot system if you're afraid to dump XP just yet.

Good thinking outside the box with the Linux suggestuion. I was locked into XP because it was what I was comfortable with. I won't bore you with all the tribulations of getting Linux set up, but 7 hours later I had a fresh install of Lubuntu working. It seems to have fixed my QLC+ audio problems, and I haven't had any problems with the ultraDMX RDM Pro. I'll have a long day with it and the lights tomorrow, hopefully that will go off without a hitch. Thanks for your help.

Sorry it took so long, but thanks for reporting back and glad it fixed it!
