New QLC+ Version 4.14.1 Immediate Crash With My Old Projects

Hello,

I just tried the new 4.14.1 Windows version on my laptop and I have a bug:

Lenovo 330-15IKB Touch
CPU:I5-8250U
Windows 10 Home Version:22H2 Build:19045.5555

Program installs fine and it will open the app just fine, except when loading any of my project files, which worked fine in version 4.13.1 and older. The only project file a can open just fine is the Sample project.

-Launching with -o to file path of my project files creates an immediate crash.
-Launching without any arguments is good, but when opening project file after creates an immediate crash.

As the file loads, the app will immediately close itself with no errors given, it just disappears. My latest project file is very complex, but even some older versions of my project files are crashing. Unfortunely, I don't have any good project files that are more basic to test. Again, the only project file a can successfully load is the Sample.qwx.

As for my troubleshooting. I reinstalled 4.13.1 unchecked all my Inputs/Outputs on my 13 Universes to clear it all up. Resaved. Installed 4.14.1. Tried to open the new saved project that has no linked Input/Output and it still crashes immediately as it loads. I appreciate the help to get this working. I am most interested in the new websocket changes. I currently have an issue related to the 4.13.1 websocket connection to Bitfocus Companion that I hope resolves.

I have the same problem, my old projects won't open with version 4.14.1.
But if I delete the scripts, it opens the project.

No problem to report here...
I uninstalled the old version, installed it under administrator and ran QLC+ under admin rights. The old project opened without problems.
(I don't have perifery at my disposal right now.)

I think version 4.14.0 converted Script functions to a new syntax but that was a deploy error of that version.
For those having this issue, please post your script code and we'll convert it back to the v4 syntax. (new syntax is for v5 only)

Hi Massimo!

Same here. Experiencing an immediate QLC+ crash when trying to open my attached v4.13.1 showfile with the new v4.14.1 running on Win 10 or 11 desktops. I have reverted back to v4.13.1 again because I have a deadline to meet for an upcoming show. But I hope this file helps you with the debug process.

Learning about QLC+ has literally consumed all my spare time since Nov 2024 and I love it! QLC+ is highly addictive and for me it's a wonderful way to spend the day !!

As above. Uninstalled 4.14.0 which had the problems reported fixed in 4.14.1. After installing 4.14.1 it crashed each time first loaded but seemed to work when reloaded. Then when trying to load QXW files they loaded but would not run and then crashed. Tried reinstalling but failed again. Given up and gone back to 4.14.0 which works fine.

Hi, I have re-released QLC+ on Windows and macOS (Apple Silicon)
Checked with your projects and it loads OK now.
Please download the updated version which is called 4.14.1-1.

Hi Massimo,
I am sad to report that while v4.14.1-1 does now open and run my posted sample FlexDesk betav9.91 file, a quick and repeatable error test of just randomly clicking across my Bank B buttons (as if performing a manual chase sequence on them) will crash the program after about 10 seconds of input by any mouse clicks, touch screen interface movrments or by joystick button entry. I use all three. This same chase-type manual action does not cause any crash on v4.13.1 (actually that old version is very stable for me). Hope this helps further the debugging!

EDIT: I also just tried installing v4.14.0 and tried running this same file. No complete program crash happens but my scripts jam up/fail and lights flicker, then the wrong lights might come on and the program hangs up at times.

My file runs a lot of scripts and it's like v4.14.0 cannot execute them or is slower to respond to the demands. In addition my RGB Matrix settings did not transfer over properly from v4.13.1 to v4.14.0. (but they did at least load into v4.14.1-1).

So I'll still continue developing my project with the old v4.13.1 Thanks!

Thanks Massimo! I apologize for not getting you my project file to you sooner. I was just now able to jump back onto the boards today and I saw where you made another install for Windows. I was going to say that the syntax did change on the scripts, but i see where you caught that yourself. I wasn't being careful myself when testing the new 4.14.1 version, so when it loaded my project file it got changed(no good backups) . I was forced into changing the syntax back to what it needed to be. Anyways, I can now say tonight as i tried the new 4.14.1 Windows download that it worked just fine.

I can continue to investigate but from what I saw from your projects, abusing the usage of Scripts is not the right way to use this software.
Scripts should be useful when all the other QLC+ Functions cannot cover your needs.
Apparently you use Script to just start/stop Functions and I'm pretty sure you can achieve that with Chasers/Collections/Scenes.

I strongly recommend to review your workflow and reduce the number of Scripts

Thank you for pointing me in a much better direction! Yes I will definitely revamp my workflow to reduce the demands being placed on the program. I admit my ignorance of fully understanding the program's operation certainly got me carried away with the use of scripts. Have a great weekend... I already know what I'll be doing!

I don't know if it will help anyone, but I downloaded all three projects, and was able to load them on my Windows 10 x64 system, running 4.14.1-1 with an Enttec Open DMX dongle plugged in.

(This post is only regarding v4.14.1-1)

Ok I altered my workflow to eliminate as many scripts as possible by using Collections instead. This definitely helped improve the program timing and has stopped the program from crashing, so I thank you for that excellent advice.

However , something else happened for which I already figured out workaround after much trial and error. When first launching the program and loading my showfile, the moment I enter Run Mode almost all my lights start to flicker without any scene being selected, no chases triggering at all, the dmx monitor shows no activity with all values =0....and that symptom pointed me to the USBtoDMX converter I use. After playing with the configuration settings on the QLC+ Input/Output tab I managed to get the program to work properly again. It just seems like I need to touch all the settings to refresh them and save the file several times to get it to settle down and work properly. I actually made no changes, just refreshed everything! So I appear to be running now on the new version and will continue to test. Thank you!

My old projects also cause 4.14.1-2 to crash immediately. I'm not using any scripts.

Okay, I just figured out what the problem is. I work with a lot of matrices. I deleted some for testing. After deleting the matrices, the old projects can be opened with 4.14.1-2.

But that's completely unacceptable for my workflow. I'll continue working with an older QLC+ version.

I can correctly open Project One and Project Two with version 4.14.1-2 on Windows. No crash.
