Recent Community Theater Show

I recently did the lighting design and ran lights for a community theater production of Wit using QLC+.

Very challenging setup, they basically did it in a function hall using the dance floor for a stage. Lighting setup was interesting.... two of the stands were DJ light stands (the far one in the pic and a copy of it behind me) and yes, the lighting hit the heads of the audience members. I worked with what I was given. I loved my design but the execution was tough. They group just moved into this place and will have some growing pains while they adapt. But they are great people.

It's great to read the different forums and Reddit of professional lighting people but a lot don't realize the "Wild West" of community theater!

Note: It was during tech week so the area is pretty messy (cleaned up for the shows) and the house lights were still on before starting the rehearsal.

Thanks for sharing. I am also in community theatre and i know the wild west :) We started with a Laptop to play sounds and just using the light switches to turn on and off.
Meanwhile have much more sophisticated setup. So things grow over time.

Can you share some details how you set up your virtual console, how is your concept and how you operate during the play?

Thanks!

Good question, I have done 8 or 10 show using QLC.
I create all my scenes in function manager and in virtual console use a solo frame and toggle each scene as needed. I expect I might end up with 50 buttons in VC, the same function may get called 2 or 3 times in a show, then I just work from top left to buttom right through the show
Things like work lights and prompt etc, are out side of the solo box
Just started to add an EMG button so one button press brings enough light on so everyone can get our easily.
One day soom I will look at MIDI, one thing that annoys me with my way of thinking is that I would like to be able to toggle the background colour on the button to very quickly see which scene is active in case my attenetion as wandered....
