I need to be able to start a music cue and have it continue to play while executing lighting and/or video cues. If I try that now the music stops when I try to run any of the other cues. Yes, I know that's how it's supposed to work, but I need to have the music continue while the others run.

QLC+ can run all kinds of functions in parallel, and ther are different ways to make it do so.
How do you run your "cues"? I assume via VC cuelist? If so, Is putting the audio to extra button and triggering manually an option? That's my preferred way of doing it, using a MIDI controller like nanoKontrol2 to trigger VC elements.
You also could program a show with a track for your music file, and more tracks for each light look you want to bring in and out at times, and run that show from a button, fader or even cuelist in VC.

I've used the button process in the past. It works but seems awkward. I've worked through the show process as well, and it seems to work just fine. Since the music is pre-recorded, it's easy to set the light changes to happen at the right time.
I'm just hoping that there's something else out there that I'm unaware of that would make it even easier.
