Workflow advice for a small setup?

I have an incredibly simple setup consisting of 4 separate RGB led strips. I'm trying to program them to run various patterns in time with my songs, but I'm finding the workflow very clunky and difficult.
The biggest issue I keep running into is an inability to time my sequence steps by note length unless I control it by speed dial. The problem this poses is two fold: 1) I can only make short sequences because each step in the sequence is given the same note length, and 2) in order to make a single very short sequence I have to go through many steps, i.e. go to the function editor, create a new sequence, add some number of steps, go to the Virtual Console, switch to design mode, click the Speed Dial, add the sequence, choose fade in/out values, close dialog, add a new button, open it's settings, learn it to a midi value, close dialogue, switch back to operate mode, test. This is just to add lights for what may not even be a bar of music.
What would be better is if I could just set note length values for the individual steps inside the function itself, and the speed dial can tell the function how many ms those steps are equivalent to. That way I can think musically when creating my sequences, and the setup can be modular, as complex sequences can be reused regardless of the tempo of the song. This would be much better than having to choose between either hardcoding ms values, or using the same note length value for every step of a sequence.
I have also tried to use the Shows tab, but this has the same issues. I can create sequences for my songs, but without being able to set sequence steps in note length values this is a very slow path to programming lights as well.
I apologize for the rant. I just feel like I'm so close to being able to do what I need. I hope I'm just being thick headed and there is a simple solution for what I'm trying to do. Anyone got any ideas?
