using as both audio and manual for DJing - best practice advice

Hello;
Great software, I am switching over to it from Enttec DMX pro.
It seems to me that I have to choose between audio triggered or manual / autorun.
For audio triggered the duration needs to be set to infinite, but that does not work well for just turning on something interesting while doing something else.
I have watched all the tutorials (I think) and printed off and read the manual from cover to cover.
Am I missing the best way to set this up?
Anybody who has any advice on the best way to set it up for DJing would be very much appreciated.
Also, no matter what I do the audio input is very low -- has anybody tried using a external mic to help that or other advice?
When DJing you sometimes have time to grab the software and fully run the light show, and other times you have put it on 'auto'.
Looking for how you have set it up to best meet these two different needs.
I am working on just learning it the next couple days with a big wedding coming up this weekend, so any advice would be helpful.
Quite a few lights, 2 gigbars, 4 moving head spots, 2 moving head wash, 12 RGB pars and a number of ADJ effect lights.
I will share the results and any new fixtures with the group of course.
I am not new to lights or DMX, software developer by day and been using this type of software since the early LightJockey days.
Thank you in advance for any help and advice.
