So,, newbie here...big time... but I am NOT going to ask anything about how to either this or that....
Actually, still waiting for my usb/dmx box, so not even started yet..

Still running a standalone, semi-ok dmx controller when doing sounds & lights for a rock band.
Decided it's time to take the step over to PC/digital software based....... wonder how much of a brick wall I'm going to hit !

So,, only vague question then,
You people who've done the move from old school to this, I'm I in for weeks of pulling my hair
or could one hope to at least get anywhere within the first few days ?

A year back, went to remote digital mixer for the sound which truly is brilliant,
but confess, took me some days to get my head around that too....first day not even getting any sound......fun fun!

Hope no one takes offense to this something of a pointless post....just seeking "hope" about this new venture !!!

Depending how much you are already acquainted with DMX in general and the complexity of your gear, I think you 'll have to take into account 1-2 days.
There is quite a learning curve - but start with Massiomo's video's; go through the manual and read it (even if you don't know what is said there)
I hope that all your fixtures are inside the QLC collection (1000+ are present) - otherwise they will have to be created also.

But hey - we are here to help out where needed - so shoot ;-)

Moving from desk to PC. With a dmx interface that can input and output you can move over in stages. You could continue to use the desk as you have been doing and also control one or two lights with Qlc via dmx input from the desk. This way you can see if your programing works the way you need it to. I was controlling a led screen via Qlc but kept all my other lights on my desk till I had figured out how to program Qlc. I have just made the move after a year, but still use my desk to trigger cuelists in Qlc.
