Don't know if your framework accepts this but...

Could / would it be possible to zoom in / out [edit] IN 3D VIEW[/edit]
mouse: mousewheel + = zooms in centered where the mousepointer is at the beginning of zoom - ergo mousewheel - zooms out centered on where the mousepointer is
touch: two finger pinch open = zooms out from the the center of the pinch-points - ergo: zooms in to the centerpoint between the pinch points

(Sketchup works like that [object orientated pan / zoom] as long as your focus is on the object it is the center of the pan / scroll / zoom function)

Let's say you have fixtures and want to look more precisely at fixture6. Drag to Center view, fixture 6 centered, 2 finger pitch out = detailed zoom to fixture6

Zoom is done with both mouse buttons pressed and moving the mouse up and down.
I haven't decided it and I guess it can be changed.

In general there is something wrong with the camera controller of the 3D preview. It is not consistent across platforms. On touchscreen is even worse.

Please always consider that mouse pointer = 2D, all the rest = 3D
Switching one to the other means casting a 3D ray from the cursor position (X/Y) toward a Z direction. Not easy.

As up to now I used the scroll wheel with a charm (;
it only zooms in (out) to the wrong environment [edit] <- bad word : 'wrong place inside workspace' [/edit]
