Triggering groups of functions one step at a time

Ask a generic question about the usage of QLC+, not related to a particular operating system

Hello everyone! I’m trying to find a reasonable way to define multiple groups of steps where both the selected group and the individual step is triggered via midi.

These groups would correspond to a specific song or song mood and each step might represent a section of the song (verse, chorus, etc) or even a smaller segment.

The order of the groups may not be known ahead of time and I would like to choose the active one based on input from on foot controller. I would also be manually triggering when to move onto the next or previous step from within the active group.

I think I can achieve this with a Chaser for each song section and a Cue List for each song/mood. What I’m less sure about is how to switch between Cue Lists and using the same controller buttons to control the next/previous/stop step actions (regardless of the selected Cue List), especially if we decide to swap songs around in the middle of the show.

Any thoughts on how I can manage this? Is there a better way to achieve something like this?

When you change your mind mid-way and swapping songs, you surely need more buttons.
The normal way of doing this would be creating a master chaser (all songs) and a sub-chaser per song.
The master chaser can be indexed. With the use of a solo frame and buttons tied to loopback channels, you could 'index' the master chaser. But then again, each song would need its dedicated hardware button.

Another option could be to use Multi Page Frames.

If you create a seperate page for each Song/Mood, you can use two Buttons on your Footswitch to scroll (Up and down) through the pages.
The logic behind this is that within QLC only the Page that is currently on top is active.

For more info read the on-line help:
If you use a footswitch like the Behringer FCB1010:
- don't use the Up and Down buttons from the footswitch (they are meant to control the banks of the Footswitch).
- you can even control two sliders on each page to change levels (or the speed of an effect, or the run time of a cue list) dynamically.

Be aware that you can repeat the same trick more than once, meaning: use a multi page frame within a multipage frame.

These are great ideas!

I’m not really expecting to create a cue list or chaser for every song, but maybe a couple dedicated to special songs and a half dozen generic mood ones to switch between for the rest of the set.

I actually like both of these for different reasons and will give them a try. Multi page sounds more intuitive to me as it matches closely with what I was imagining, but having a master cue list with indexes tied to buttons might make jumping around easier if we go out of order or if we need multiple scenes per song section.

Thanks guys!
