I'm pretty sure the BPM window now allows the audio input as a source. Maybe I'm mistaken.

One idea, Ableton Live has a “tempo follow” feature that monitors the incoming audio and adjusts bpm to keep in time. You could create a simple one note MIDI loop and have that MIDI note control a tap button on a speed dial.
