Better timeline/show previewing?

Hello all, I am working on an art installation in which I want to program a lighting sequence to a 1 hour long track. Coming from a background in film and animation I've been essentially trying to use the sequence function to kind of keyframe the colour changes over the hour, and using long fade ins and fade outs to transition smoothly between the steps. This is seeming to work well enough when playing back the entire show, however I'm having great difficulty when trying to preview the steps or jump to different points in the timeline.

When trying to preview the steps, often times the lights simply won't react, and/or the wrong values will show up in the step, when jumping around in the timeline often the lights are showing the wrong colours for the step that they are on (I have a feeling this has to do with the long fades which I am using for the transitions between steps), and when I do manage to get the step to preview properly on the lights it seems to start to very slowly fade to black. I've tried setting all the steps to a common 1ms fade in/out and 1s duration and a lot of these problems still seem to exist.

I feel like I'm missing something very basic, and if I am please let me know, otherwise if someone knows of a more elegant solution for achieving what I am trying to do, or even a different program which could potentially run on a pi, I am all ears!
