Hi all,
I've got everything rigged up correctly - when I move any of my faders in the Simple Desk, my lights will change respectively. Its gorgeous.
However, when I create a button (or any widget) on the Virtual Console and assign it a function... nothing happens. I can see on the monitor activity that nothing is being sent to DMX. I've made sure to check the functions I created, a simple red light on/off, are not the problem... am I missing something? Thanks!

Again, there's no Simple Desk in QLC+ 5.

Moved, but still, more details are needed.
E.g. what is "a function" in the first place.

So I've got the Universe 1 all set up with Inputs/Outputs (in this case its DMX USB for OUT, and MIDI IAC Driver for IN, as I plan on controlling from MIDI in Ableton) and I've added the fixture I am working with. In the Simple Desk window if I move the faders, my LED fixture responds accordingly so I can see QLC+ is talking to my fixture just fine via DMX.
In the function window, I created a basic scene for my fixture to display a red light. I've made sure to add the correct fixture and have the Red slider 'checked' and the slider all the way up.
In the Virtual Console, I created a simple button. I've assigned the function of that button to be the one that I created in the previous paragraph above. The button is set to 'toggle function on/off'. I set the External Input to MIDI and press my MIDI button and it is recognized.
Now, when I switch to Operate Mode and either click on the button to activate it, or press my MIDI switch, nothing happens. If I watch the Simple Desk while I do this, nothing happens.
I hope that's enough info - sorry, this is my first time working with DMX lighting so I appreciate your patience!

Most likely you have set LTP channels in your Scene. LTP channels are set immediately and then the Scene is stopped.
HTP channels, on the other hand, keep the Scene running.
All channels are LTP except for dimmers and colors which are HTP.
Check what is LTP/HTP here: https://www.qlcplus.org/docs/html_en_EN/concept.html
OR, the fixture you've created is just wrong and you need to set colors to the Intensity group.
