Monitor Window doesn't 'float' on Mac OS X Y.1

i noticed in the video tutorials the Monitor window floats on Massimo's ubuntu system, but on my MacBook Pro 2012 10.10.1 it gets covered over by the main window.

is there a way to make it float on top like the Speed Dial window?
