Some help required:

Just got my American DJ Mega Tri Par light out of the box. Connected it to my USB to DMX module and then via a USB cable to my Mac Pro. QLC+ is saying the device is operating correctly in Inputs/Outputs and I have ticked the Output box there. I have set up the address on the device to '1' in 7 Channel mode. I don't seem to have any control of the device from QLC+ though and I'm at a bit of a loss as to why. If I go into simple desk no fader makes any difference. I am currently using the ADJ TRI64 fixture in QLC+ since that is the closest I can find.

Any help getting this to work would be gratefully received. I am running out of time.

Thank you
Connor Faulder

Does the USB DMX adaptor have status lights or software to see commands passing through it? That would determine whether QLC+ (and anything else) is at fault.

Thank you.

There is a solid red LED on the module when QLC+ is running. Also the back of the TriPar shows the address A001 and that flashes when QLC+ is not running but is steady when it is. I would have thought this implies that something is getting through. However I have no control of the TriPar from QLC+. I have tried making a very basic setup and then using the Simple Desk in QLC+ but the sliders have no effect.

I have selected 7 channel mode on the TriPar. I am using a standard 3 pin XLR mic cable to connect between the module and the light. I have attached some grabs to show more about the settings in QLC+. I have tried different fixture settings - first using ADJ Tri64 and then Eurolite Par56. No luck with either.

All the best.

You might want to drive it using a generic 7-channel dimmer, to make sure your "closest" fixture definition isn't breaking it. Then make sure channel 7 (master dimmer) is above zero as well as channels 1-3. Or try it in 3-channel mode for simplicity.

Do you have access to a simple lighting desk that you can try to rule out QLC+ or the adaptor? Otherwise, as Matthew said, have a play about with the modes...

Thanks so much for responding.

Since I wrote my posting I have made some progress. I realised that there was a problem with the driver install for the DMX module and have now managed to install it correctly. I now have basic control of the lights for the first time. I have also found out that neither light can be controlled by QLC+ if I set them to 7 Channel Mode - they only seem controllable when set to 3 Channel Mode on the unit - otherwise they are off. This is a bit limiting and regardless of the fact that I am using a 7 Channel fixture in QLC+. Currently I am using a TRI64 Pro 1 fixture in QLC+ which I thought was about as close as I could get. I have also tried the Eurolight LED56 fixture. I don't really know how to set up a new fixture in QLC+. I can play with a generic fixture.

All the best Phil

Got a bit of spare time so currently making a fixture based on the manual, will post it in the Fixtures section
Massimo Callegari

I've already made it and I am in direct contact with Philip via email.
Please hold on :)

You're evil Massimo! I've just spent 30 minutes adding all the Macro colours!
Massimo Callegari

hehe...I'm faster though ;)
Connor Faulder

I think, if possible, it may be a good idea to add a eyedropper tool to select colours from other windows: the internet for example. I'm sure this is possible (?)
Massimo Callegari

In Linux it is. When you open the color selction tool, you've got a color picker (the small green pipe)
Then you can go outside the window and select any pixel on the screen.

P.S. Sorry about the fixture, but I read your post after I finished to write it.
Connor Faulder

No problem about the fixture. Currently on Windows, I need to try it on Linux on my laptop - must make it a bit easier!

Thank you, thank you, thank you - I feel really well looked after. I jumped into this unfamiliar world of lighting (to add to my usual domains of composing and film-making) and now it looks like things are getting set up. I'm now back at base and will get testing with your new fixture and set up Massimo. Thank you Connor for also working on the fixture. Phil
